Schönwies ist eine Gemeinde im Bezirk Landeck mit rund 1680 Einwohnern in der Nähe von Zams.

Schönwies ist wenn man von Innsbruck ins Obere Inntal fährt die erste Gemeinde im Bezirk Landeck. Durch das Dorf fliest der Inn, und im breiten Inntal befinden sich viele schöne Wiesen - wie der Ortsname schon sagt.

Erstmals wurde Schönwies unter dem Namen „Sawrs“ im Jahr 1288 urkundlich erwähnt. Der Name Saurs deutet jedoch auf die vorrömische Zeit, von der auch Münzen und Überresteste bei Ausgrabungen gefunden wurden.
Saurs ist heute noch ein Ortsteil von Schönwies.

Nach der Einwanderung der Bajuwaren im 6. Jahrhundert beginnt die Rodungstätigkeit im Tal, welche sich bis ins 20. Jahrhundert erstreckte. So weisen nebendem Ortsnamen Schönwies mehrere Rodungsnamen und die Flurform auf eine typische Rodungssiedlung hin.

Bis etwa 1400 gehörte Saurs zur Gemeinde Zams, wurde dann aber zur eigenständigen Gemeinde.

In den Jahren 1681-1686 wurde im Ortsteil Schönwies eine neue Kirche mit Seelsorge gebaut, wodurch nach der Zeit die Bezeichnung auf die ganze Gemeinde übergegangen ist. Seit 1800 wird der Ortsname Schönwies offiziell verwendet.
Die ältere Kirche (spätgotischer Stil) des Ortes steht in Obsaurs und wurde um 1450 erbaut.

Früh wurde die „Saurer Prugken“ (Saurer Brücke), die das Dorf mit der Durchzugsstraße am linken Innufer verband erwähnt. Diese wurde von der Bundesstraße abgelöst.

In den 1980er Jahren wurde die Autobahn durch das Inntal gebaut.

Im Jahr 1883 wurde die Arlbergbahn eröffnet, was sich sehr positiv auf die eigene wirtschaftliche Lage auswirkte. Viele Saisonarbeiter haben in der eigenen Heimat eine gute Arbeitsstelle gefunden.

Das Schönwieser Wappen wurde am 11. April 1983 verliehen. Es ist schräglinks geteilt und in den Farben gold und rot sind drei Kleeblätter dargestellt, die den Ortsnamen versinnbildlichen.
